For a contractor, there’s nothing more frustrating than receiving a shipment of building materials only to discover the materials are damaged. It’s a frustrating experience for everyone, from the home or business owner having their project delayed to the lumberyard that sold the now-damaged product. How BPI Can Help Your Lumberyard is by preventing this scenario. The truly frustrating thing is – it’s so preventable.
At BPI, we believe that damage prevention just takes a bit of innovation and extra effort to ensure that every shipment shows up undamaged, plus on time and clearly labeled.
The benefits of high-quality packaging to lumberyards pay off in a number of ways:
- Quicker turnaround time at your lumberyard – it’s already packaged for the job site.
- Labels that assure you’re receiving and delivering the correct product, minimizing errors.
- Minimal damage during transport to your yard or onto the job site.
- Contractors are happier because their product arrives in pristine condition and job site damage is minimized.
BPI’s Careful Approach to Packaging Building Materials
Our Enhanced Packaging processes ensure that the products and the delivery process are both pristine. We don’t just throw everything into a one-size-fits-all package and call it a day; we’ve developed specialized techniques for different products so that every possible type of damage is accounted for.
For example, a large product, such as an interior door, may come packaged from BPI like this:
This packaging includes:
- A barcode that makes the package easy to track from location to location
- A full shroud that protects the product from dirt, scratches, and sun damage
- Pallet boards that keep the product from overstraining while allowing easy forklift access
- Green banding that securely holds both the shroud and the pallet boards to your product
- Protective corners that keep the bands from digging into the product and causing dents and scratches
- Strong tape that covers the edges and keeps the product tucked into the shroud
The packaging elements work in tandem to protect the product from external factors while preventing damage between each packaging component.
But this approach doesn’t work for every product we offer. For example, James Hardie trim and boards and similar products can over-flex and break in transport without additional stabilization. That’s why we developed the “Ice Cream Sandwich,” which looks like this:
For this type of packaging, we:
- Use wood boards on top and bottom to stabilize the product inside
- Overhang the wood boards to protect the sides of the product from bumps
- Band and palletize to tighten the product and make it easier to move
- Wrap the ends to keep them from flopping.
For smaller products and quantities, we use long plastic sleeves that are cut to the length needed to enclose and secure the product thoroughly.
We use this approach for screws, brackets, caulk, and small quantities of decking, j-channel, and trims. These types of products can easily get lost or damaged if you’re not careful, which is why we make sure they’re secure and labeled with barcodes.
BPI Job Packs: Accurate and Convenient
Of course, most of the time, your customers will be ordering many different types of products for their job. When those products are sent separately, there’s a greater chance of error. That’s why we also offer Job Packs, which bundle product orders by job and job site and tag them with customer and project information.
Job Packs can be delivered to your yard or directly to your customer’s job site for extra convenience, and they’re clearly labeled, which means the customer can really hit the ground running and use the products efficiently.
BPI’s Better Packaging Means Happier Customers
BPI prides itself on being customer-centric, and our thoughtful approach to packaging can help your lumberyard become more customer-centric, too.
